FAQ: Connection Errors

I have been trying to connect my phone (6310i) to your software - unsuccessfully. I am wondering if you know of any issues regarding why it is not connecting.

It would not connect using a direct serial cable so I bought a USB to serial cable in addition. So I use 2 cables:

1. A serial to USB from the PC
2. A normal serial cable from the phone

The 2 cables then connect into each other.

I have used both methods of connection with other devices so I know that both methods of connection are working properly.

Later I decided to use a Nokia 6100. I connected using a USB cable. It is working fine with the Nokia software but it is not connecting at all to Ozeki SMS server. The USB cable showed on COM 4. I tried 2 baud rates, 9600 and 19200 all with no success. I was able to connect using infrared but I did not want to use infrared. I wonder if you can help in any way.

Answer:

One of my favourite phones for Ozeki SMS is Nokia 6310i. I use it with my laptop. The connection works on both baud rates 19200 and 9600 with a Nokia DLR-3 serial cable. If I use a USB cable, I have to use 9600 baud, because my USB cable for some reason does not support the higher speed.

There are two common reasons why Nokia users sometimes cannot connect their phone to our software via a data-cable. Both can be resolved easily. I hope one of these resolutions will tackle your problem.

Reason 1:

You have installed a Nokia phone manager software or a Nokia driver before you have installed Ozeki SMS to your computer. The Nokia softwares lock the serial port, and do not let any other software connect to it.

Resolution:

Uninstall the previously installed Nokia software (e.g.: Nokia Datasuite) from your PC, and try to connect to your phone again from Ozeki SMS.

Reason 2:

You use a Nokia cable that is not compatible with our software. Ozeki SMS uses Nokia GSM phones as a modem. Some Nokia cables, especially the older ones, do not allow modem connections.

Resolution:

Use a DLR-3 compatible cable!

I think in your case the first reason is the one that causes the error.
